AG,

It is great to hear things are going well.

I understand you are very busy. Do you think you would be able to field a few questions about entering the IP law arena in the future?

Thanks,

NMD

Are you sure about that? Statistics always made my head hurt. Bell curve distributions, medians. averages...

And accounting is an exercise in creativity. How is it that corporations have one number when it comes to profitability for share holders and another when it comes time to pay taxes - two different accounting methods. Exxon didn't pay a dime in taxes - I would be a fool to tell my broker to not include oil company shares in my portfolio.

I have one number for income, another for self employment taxes, another for "normal" taxes. Which one do I choose to show the bank when I want to maximize a loan? Sole proprietor - the numbers are a first set of number. Create and S-corp - you can change those numbers and create a whopping savings in taxes. Stock options - taxable income or not...assets or not?

So is 1+1 always 2? Is the shortest distance between two points always a line? Is time a constant? Numbers can be used to say anything you want them to say!

Vary the sampling rate and you may get a completely different answer when it come to measurement of various parameters. Us engineers create assumptions to compensate for limitations introduced by pure mathematics.

Every single thing in life is a function of perspective. There are no such things as facts. Nothing in this world is black and white - not even the colors black and white.

My favorite figure in the world is the square root of -1. You can work magic with imaginary numbers. \:\)

take care,
AG

Hi NMD:

You have read my angst-ridden posts and still want to know about patent law! LOL! Sigh... I hide my pain well!

Sure, I would be happy to field any questions you have about patent law. For starters - do you have a degree in a technical area - as in engineering, math, or science?

take care,
AG

AG,

Thanks! I have a BS in Secondary Math Education, a Master of Computer Information Systems and several Microsoft certifications. I have worked in Software Development for over 14 years in a variety of industries.

This is a fact in this case. There are two types of money. My money and your money.

However I have 4 surfboards and you have a BMW. No worries.

Hi NMD:

You are probably already qualified to work as a technical specialist. Which means you can draft patents but they must be reviewed and filed by someone that has passed the patent bar. Technical specialists make less than patent agents and patent attorneys.

You may already be qualified to be a patent agent You need a minimum number of credits in technical fields to qualify to sit for the patent bar exam. You do not need a law degree.

If you go to the USPTO.gov website, you can find the requirements to sit for the patent bar or just call them - they are very helpful and friendly.

Software is a good background - very active area in patents.

You will hit a ceiling paywise and promotion-wise if you do not get a JD.

Some people work as a patent agent at a law firm by day and go to law school at night. I didn't do that myself - but have friends who have... You essentially have no life.

Salaries for 1st year attorneys are obscene these days... But there is a price - the mental toll on you. Average billables at large law firms are about 2000 hours a year. Some firms also require additional hours of community service and marketing on top of that... The bar is unreachable - so you are never good enough.

Okay - I don't have the most positive view of law firms! Does it show?

Does this help? Go ahead and ask questions and I will try to focus my answers.

AG

Hi Everyone:

I have taken care of the physical manifestations of angst and stress. I am eating well - exercising.

BUT, I am still over the top stressed and more prone to anger and that ole Clint Eastwood mood...

The bottom line my mental state is beyond exhausted. Until I take my break next week - my disposition is not going to change for the better. Unfortunately I have deadlines that must be met before I leave - and it is extra challenging b/c no matter how rested I feel physically - my brain is fried.

I am still in a very reactive mood - and Clint Eastwood mood is just waiting for a reason to be set free! LOL!

No getting around that right now - just need to accept that it is how it is right now. I need to just keep working to meet my deadlines the best I can.

Things will slow down after Houston and I will be rested. I really am hoping for a serious change in attitude - otherwise I need to wear a sign - Beware Woman On The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown - Tread Lightly Or Risk Annihilation!

take care,
AG
